Professional Learning: A New Way

- a new way to get things done -

Alternative PD

Outstanding Quality

Professional development is the way most administrators educate and inform their teachers. The sessions are usually whole group, mundane, sit and get gatherings where information is gathered from a power point or a book of handouts. They lack specificity, targeted focuses, and diversity. This section explores the other side of PL

How We Do It

Truly Top-Notch

There are 5 principals to a new way of professional development/professional learning:
1 - Duration: a significant and ongoing time period for new strategies.
2 - Teacher Support: assistance and aid during implementation of new strategies.
3 - Engagement: active instruction through different approaches for learning new strategies.
4 - Modeling: showing teachers what is expected by doing it first.
5 - Content: specific grade-
level content and personalized to the learners’ needs.

Why We Do It

Outstanding Quality

Often times the why is lost in translation because the behaviors administrators demonstrate negates the validity of the message they are trying to deliver. For me the why was simple: honoring the time and space of the educator. My personal why has been driven deeper with the transition of my son. I have yet to completely processed the experience and the last thing I want to do is sit in a point drawn out meeting chalked full of information that could have been emailed to me.

Big Harry Audacious Goal & 3 Column Table

Truly Top-Notch

Do you have the courage to do what it takes? Are your goals big enough to stretch the limitations we have placed on ourselves and still able to be obtained or do you have room to go bigger? Here is my take on Jim Collins' BHAG and a look at my 3 colum table.

Incentives Are NECESSARY!

Only the Best

My campus gives rewards in the form of jeans and the teachers LOVE it. I have incorporated a way to gives jeans rewards for those teachers who volunteer to aid in immersing others in the new way to do professional learning. The more you volunteer the more you jeans rewards you earn. My next goal is to get half day coverage so teachers can take a mental health afternoon. We all have the ability to learn from one another. Why not figure out a way to get some rest doing it.

The Plan

Truly Top-Notch

Often times we as educators have amazing ideas that we want to implement but the planning required doesn't take place for a myriad of reasons. I have started that conversation and with the help of my campus peers; we will bring it to life.

Par for the Course

The First Session

The first session of the PL training has been completed and will be used as a starting point to get teachers acclimated to self-instruction. Our goal is to move more content to this platform in hopes to honor the time and space teachers need to rejuvinate.
