Out with the old - in with the new!
On the topic of change it is my experience that most people use this methodology of processing and thinking about change. It is rather archaic to me however I have seen this be prevalent more times than not.
To focus on the fight is to lose before you even begin. Shifting your energy to what is most important can certainly be beneficial in the fight for effective and innovative education.
Listening to the video Progressive Education in the 1940's only a small amount of the verbiage was familiar. The father expressing his concern for his son learning arithmetic was one of them because it was used highly as I matriculated through school and boys would take home economics.
Some aspects and taught on what students will learn will never change.
An unfortunate truth in my opinion. We have not seen a more significant change in education because it forces people to release what they believe and embrace the unknown. Many people, especially those in power, do not like to let go of anything. They/we are often blinded by the way things have been or what we have been doing and can not see that change is good.
On my in my environment everyone (except one) loves the idea of digital learning. It is after all a STEAM campus.
The notion that digital learning can increase lexile levels and catapult students creativity is astonishing. The drawback is students are not serviced on a 1 to 1 bases and the amount of available technology away from home is slim to non-existent.
Students are unable to go to the library in my community because they are taking care of siblings or going to work. They are unable to check out chrome books because the walk score in our area indicates a high probability of being robbed.
As a result the people who like what they like are able to dictate where our resources go and what type of “aid” we receive.
As much as things change, they also seem to stay the same without the tools necessary to expose students to what is possible.
